Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the ‘Parakram Diwas’ ceremony at the Red Fort in New Delhi on Tuesday evening to mark the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose.

As a part of the celebrations, PM Modi will also launch ‘Bharat Parv’, which will be held between January 23 and January 31 to showcase the country’s rich diversity with Republic Day tableaux and cultural performances.

“Best wishes to the people of India on Parakram Diwas. Today on his birth anniversary we honor the life and courage of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. His unwavering dedication to the freedom of our country will continue to inspire,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.

What is ‘Parakram Diwas’?

Parakram Diwas is celebrated annually from 2021 onwards to honor Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and inspire the people of the country, especially the youth, to act with fortitude in the face of adversity, as Netaji did, And the feeling of patriotism was to be instilled in them. The inauguration ceremony was celebrated at Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was born on 23 January in Cuttack (present-day Odisha) to Janakinath Bose and Prabhavati Dutt.

In a notification, the Union Culture Ministry said the government has decided to celebrate the 125th jubilee year starting from January 23, 2021, “in a befitting manner at the national and international level”.

The decision was also taken to celebrate the 124th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and pay tribute to his tireless efforts in India’s freedom struggle.

Parakram Diwas, which translates to “Day of Valor” or “Day of Courage”, holds significant significance in honoring Netaji’s legacy and inspiring future generations.

In 2022, a hologram statue of Netaji was unveiled at the India Gate and in 2023, the 21 largest unnamed islands of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were named after the 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees and a National Memorial dedicated to Netaji was unveiled. What to expect this year?

During the Parakram Diwas 2024 programme, PM Modi will digitally launch ‘Bharat Parv’, which is being organized by the Tourism Ministry to showcase the diversity of the country with Republic Day tableaux and cultural performances.

The nine-day event will see 26 ministries and departments highlighting citizen-centric initiatives, Vocal for Local and diverse tourist attractions. A platform for people across the world to engage, reflect and celebrate the revived spirit of the nation, the event will take place at the Ram Leela Maidan and Madhav Das Park in front of the Red Fort.

The activities will highlight the deep legacy of Netaji, as Bose was known, and the Azad Hind Fauj.

Why was the Red Fort chosen?

The Red Fort played an important role in the saga of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Azad Hind Fauj. A museum within the Red Fort dedicated to preserving and honoring the legacy of Bose and the INA was also inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi on Netaji’s birthday in 2019.

The names of Colonel Prem Sehgal, Colonel Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon and Colonel Shahnawaz Khan are etched in history as key figures in the Red Fort trials. Their commitment to India’s freedom struggle led to the infamous Red Fort Barracks Case, a landmark trial that demonstrated the unwavering resolve of the Azad Hind Fauj.
