The announcement is part of BMW’s wider Neue Klasse strategy, which underpins the next generation of electric BMW’s model to be launched later this decade. According to the company, the first all-electric BMW M model will be launched in 2027, ushering in a new era in the high-performance segment. The electric M-Series will be developed exclusively around the Neue Klasse platform, with bespoke hardware, software and Battery Technology designed to maintain the driving characteristics the brand is known for on road and track.
“The next generation of the model will set new standards in the high-performance automotive segment,” said Franciscus van Meel, Managing Director of BMW M GmbH. “With the latest generation of Neue Klasse technology, we are taking the BMW M driving experience to a new level and will provide our customers with outstanding, track-ready everyday driving dynamics.”
At the heart of BMW M’s electric strategy is a new powertrain concept called BMW M eDrive. Unlike current electric BMWs, the M version will feature a four-motor layout, with one motor driving each wheel. The system is designed to allow engineers to control torque delivery, traction and stability with extreme precision, while also allowing the car’s characteristics to be altered depending on driving conditions.
BMW says the four electric motors are managed by an integrated control system called BMW M Dynamic Performance Control, which works in conjunction with Neue Klasse’s new electronic architecture. The architecture is built around four high-performance computers (referred to internally as “superbrains”), each responsible for a different area of car operation, including driving dynamics, autonomous driving, infotainment and comfort functions.
One of the computers, nicknamed the “Heart of Joy”, is entirely dedicated to driving dynamics. BMW says this enables faster data processing and more immediate response to driver input, while also enabling future upgrades to be delivered more quickly over the vehicle’s life.
The four-motor layout allows BMW M to combine the characteristics of rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Under certain conditions, the front axle can be completely decoupled, effectively providing rear-wheel drive behavior for improved efficiency and extended range on long highway runs. When maximum performance is required, torque can be distributed independently to each wheel, improving traction and stability in extreme conditions.
BMW says this configuration allows for maximum energy recovery and optimal traction right to the edge of grip, while also allowing for more direct throttle response. The company claims that the electric drive unit used in the BMW M eDrive is the most powerful electric motor the M division has ever deployed.

The battery technology that powers these models has also been developed specifically for high-performance use. The high-voltage battery will provide more than 100 kWh of usable energy and is based on BMW’s sixth-generation battery technology designed for Neue Klasse. While BMW hasn’t released range figures yet, the company says the focus is on balancing everyday usability with sustained high-performance driving.
The battery’s cooling system and its Energy Master control unit have been tuned to support higher peak power output and faster charging, while maintaining performance during repeated hard driving on the track.
The Neue Klasse platform operates on an 800-volt electrical architecture, which BMW says results in increased charging capacity and higher recovery rates. The battery housing also plays a structural role within the vehicle, connecting the front and rear axles and increasing overall body stiffness, thereby improving handling and responsiveness.
As part of its electric transformation, BMW M is also introducing new materials. Lightweight construction remains a central focus and BMW M will use natural fiber components in the production of a high-performance model for the first time.
BMW has been developing the material for motorsport applications since 2019, and it has similar properties to carbon fiber but is produced with around 40% lower CO2 emissions. BMW said the experience gained through racing allowed it to verify the durability and production feasibility of the materials used in the road car.
While BMW has yet to confirm specific performance figures, dimensions or pricing for its first electric M model, the company has made clear that road and track capabilities remain at the heart of the plan. Features such as predefined driving modes, simulated gear shifting and newly developed soundscapes are also planned, aiming to provide an emotional driving experience without an internal combustion engine.
More details on the first BMW M electric models, including production versions and specifications, are expected to be released in 2027.
