Whoopi Goldberg remembers Geraldine Page’s praise on her Oscar win

Whoopi Goldberg recently confessed that she was not disappointed in losing the Oscar to Geraldine Page.

In his new memoir, Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and MeThe sister Act The actress recalled that she was nominated against a star-studded lineup of past and future Oscar winners: Anne Bancroft, Jessica Lange, Meryl Streep and the eventual winner, Geraldine Page.

“When I got my first Oscar nomination purple colour, I didn’t know how I felt about it. I knew I was good in the film and it was worthy of a nomination, but I didn’t expect this,” the 68-year-old said.

After Geraldine’s name was announced in 1986, Whoopi could be seen “clapping like crazy”.

“When she was going on stage, the actor sitting next to me said, ‘Why did you clap so much when she beat you?’ I said, ‘What do you mean? She’s Geraldine Page. You know, she’s Geraldine Page,'” Whoopi explained.

Reflecting on Geraldine’s success, the host said, “It was her victory, and in a way mine too because I was also a New Yorker/actor. I was thinking, ‘She’s an actress from New York. I’m an actor from New York. And that was good enough for me.”

Speaking of Geraldine, SceneThe host explained, “I never had the money to watch it when I was a kid, but I read about his show in the newspaper.”

Whoopi said, “I also knew that he had been nominated for an Oscar many times and had never won an Oscar. To me, he is one of the best and last actors.”

At the time, the actress and host wrote in her memoir, “I knew it was Geraldine Page for her performance. A journey of abundance. And I was thinking, ‘You’re not the only one who feels that way about him.'”
