President Draupadi Murmu presented the Prime Minister’s National Children’s Awards at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the occasion of Brave Children’s Day on Friday, December 26. The recipients included eight-year-old Vyoma Priya from Chennai, who was honored posthumously for bravery.

His mother Archana Sivaramakrishnan received the award on behalf of Vyoma.

Vyoma died earlier this year after attempting to save a small child from an electrified playground at his apartment complex.

Vyoma Priya’s adventures in Chennai’s apartment playground

According to details shared by the family, Vyoma was playing in the children’s park inside her residential complex when a six-year-old boy fell on the metal slide.

It was later discovered that the slide had become electrified because it was installed over a damaged underground power cable.

When the little boy fell on the slide, Vyoma moved towards him and tried to pull him up.

She came in contact with the flowing stream. The boy survived. Vyoma did not.

The incident led to a security review inside the apartment complex and a police investigation into the damaged cables and installation of playground equipment.

What did Vyoma’s family say after receiving the award?

Speaking to ANI after receiving the award, Archana Sivaramakrishnan said that it was hard to receive the recognition.

“I am receiving the gallantry award on behalf of our daughter Vyoma Priya,” she said. “She was eight years old when it happened. A slide in the park had been electrocuted by a damaged underground cable. A six-year-old boy fell, and Vyoma tried to save him, but was electrocuted herself.”

He said it was a “bittersweet moment” for the family and that he wished Vyoma herself had been present to receive the honor.

Why was Vyoma’s name included in the National Bravery List?

The Prime Minister’s National Children’s Award is India’s highest civilian award for children and is given annually in categories including bravery, innovation, social service and sports.

Vyoma’s name was included in the 2025 list under the gallantry category.

Officials said the award recognized his “extraordinary courage” and his effort to protect another child despite personal risk.
