Carse was also at the center of one of the more hot-tempered moments of the day as he was convinced he had caught Marnus Labuschagne, leading to him Angry words exchanged between couple,

“What a day,” Carsey said. “Whoever came to watch got value for money with 19 wickets. It was fantastic. The atmosphere was fantastic; the energy all day was amazing.

“It was a great final session for everyone and it puts us in a good position for tomorrow.”

The 30-year-old is competing in his first Ashes, his best appearance to date in an England shirt.

Born in South Africa, the son of former Zimbabwe and Northamptonshire cricketer James Carse, he qualified to play in English county cricket due to his British ancestry and completed his England Residency qualification in 2019.

His early career was hampered by injuries, missing out on the 2018 County Championship due to a knee problem, but he quickly put the disappointment behind him and began to shine for Durham.

He burst onto England’s radar after an impressive 2019 season and booked a place on the England Lions tour to Australia.

Carse was later among the beneficiaries of England’s Covid-stricken squad with new faces for their ODI series against Pakistan in July 2021, all of whom had to be replaced due to positive tests.

This marked his England ODI debut where he performed brilliantly and took five wickets in the third match.

He made only two first-class appearances in 2022, but started the following summer in strong form, scoring a maiden century and demonstrating that he had more than one feather to his bowling.

Carse made his T20 debut in the close-season clash with New Zealand, resulting in him once again being called up as a late replacement, stepping in for the injured Reece Topley during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Carsey’s domestic 2024 season was marred by a 16-month ban – 13 months of which were suspended – for breaching ECB betting rules. He was found to have placed 303 bets on cricket matches between 2017 and 2019, the majority of which were placed while watching the game at home as he battled two long-term injuries.

Nevertheless, his year ended on a high with a Test debut in Pakistan, which proved to be a vital weapon as he took four wickets for 140 in Multan.

He left his mark in an England shirt with a 10-wicket performance in England’s win over New Zealand in Christchurch, and while his 2025 has started with another trip to the treatment table for toe surgery, he is back to his best after a stellar performance in the Ashes.

England were bowled out for 172 in less than 33 overs, but Cares played a key role in their emphatic reply, restricting Australia to 123 for nine and trailing by 49 runs after the first day.
