Other safest cities include Overland Park, Kansas, which ranked second on the list, Burlington, Vermont, ranked third, and Juneau, Alaska, ranked fourth.
Overland Park did well partly because of having safe roads. The city has the fifth-lowest pedestrian fatality rate and the 21st-lowest percentage of uninsured drivers. With the 14th lowest unemployment rate in the country, it also has good conditions for financial security.
Burlington, meanwhile, scored well, having the 26th lowest murder rate and having an overall low risk for many types of natural disasters and severe weather.
When conducting the study, WalletHub looked at 182 cities, including the 150 most populous US cities and at least the two most populous cities in each state.
The financial website compared three metrics: home and community safety, natural disaster risk and financial security. Each city can get a maximum of 60 points for the first category and a maximum of 20 points for the second and third categories.
Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale and weighted accordingly. Cities were then ranked based on their overall safety score.
