no The British crime drama of recent years may even pretend to rival the thrilling corruption saga line of dutySince its first season premiered in 2012 Sixth and most recent series In 2021, BBCThe crown jewel of scripted television has captivated audiences of all demographics with its complex and addictive twists and turns. The story is based on AC-12, a team of internal affairs investigators hunting down corrupt police officers. No twisted copper is apparently high-ranking or powerful enough to escape the clutches of the core team, the three gunmen we know and love: Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), Kate Fleming (Vicki McClure) and Steve Arnott (martin compston,

But after several seasons of convoluted plotlines, morally gray characters, and countless shocking switch-and-bet moments (remember the “immediate egress required” text from season three that had you screaming “Mother of God” at the TV? When Dot shot Lindsay Denton in the car?) Most recent season finale Floated like a loose birthday balloon by comparison. After the big reveal that Buckels was a bad guy all along, producers Jed Mercurio Decided he was little more than a cog in a machine. Of course, systemic corruption is the problem, not the potential existence of evil talents.

The sad truth is that our institutions are so broken that they must be reformed. line of duty The punchline didn’t please everyone. It was not only the viewers who were a little disappointed with the ending of the series. There were even characters. It all just felt like a full stop to the show.

That’s not the case, as the BBC has now announced that the show will be returning for a seventh season. In the new six-part series, police anti-corruption unit AC-12 is disbanded and rebranded as the Police Standards Inspectorate. According to the BBC, “Anti-corruption work has never been tougher and in this challenging environment Steve Arnott (Compston), Kate Fleming (McClure) and Ted Hastings (Dunbar) are assigned their most sensitive case yet”.

All we know so far is that there will be a new character, Detective Inspector Dominic Gough, who is accused of abusing his position of trust to act as a sexual predator.

Here are our predictions for the mysterious seventh season…

TWBMA (there will be more acronyms)

This entry is not actually a prediction. It is an inevitability like death and taxes. a simple fact of line of duty Universe. During the first six seasons, actors would complain about missing police jargon in the scripts, from CHIS (covert human intelligence source) to AFO (authorized firearms officer). Martin Compston once reported, “I had a line that contained five acronyms in a sentence.” Independent. “Absolute torture.” Not having deep knowledge of the inner workings of British policing, I’m not exactly sure what the new workplace acronyms might be. But here are a few I’d like to see pop up after the gang’s day is over. Jade, are you paying attention? Maybe Kate Fleming could go out with the girls for some VPR (very light rosé) after work. Steve may go shopping for some new WAP (unfortunately, not in the Cardi B sense, but in the waistcoat apparel sense). And Hastings can shorten his catchphrase to JMJATWD (Jesus, Mary, Joseph and Wee Donkey). Rolls right off the tongue, right? ellie harrison

One of these stars will enter the fold

the best thing about line of duty Its revolving door is of bent copper. Mercurio may have fun bashing them senseless (RIP Lennie James, Gina McKee, Keeley Hawes, Daniel Mays… the list goes on), but they’re excellent quality as long as they last. All the guest stars are veterans of British crime drama, and all have a certain characteristic feel Them. These are people you might believe were banging in the pub, but you could also imagine they were caught up in a money-laundering operation and met a very tragic end before being put in the freezer. Or reluctantly eating porridge while wearing a string. This type of thing. We know that the new central guest character of the new season will be DI Dominic Gough, and our guess is that he could be played by one of these actors who have the above vibe: Adeel Akhtar, Eddie Marsan, Richard Madden. I suggest they all start understanding their police terminology right now. eh

Weather police will be under question

Mercurio has always been a political writer, turning his anger at institutional failure into entertaining drama. So it is almost certain that he will weave in the recent developments in police corruption in the next chapter line of dutyFrom 2021, the Metropolitan Police has launched a major crackdown aimed at rooting out corruption within its ranks, In 2023, more than 1,000 officers out of a workforce of approximately 34,000 were either suspended or placed on restricted duties, Equally worrying was the finding that 275 people were awaiting trial for gross misconduct, many of which involved allegations of violence against women and girls, The reckoning follows the shock convictions of two former officers: serial rapist David Carrick and Sarah Everard’s murderer Wayne Couzens, None of these will escape Mercurio’s attention – or his dramatic scrutiny, He

We will lose one of the big three

A bold reset seems inevitable, and could mean the loss of one of the main trio: Hastings, Fleming, or Arnott. They’re all reprising their roles in season seven, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be sticking around for the entire season. Dunbar seems like the safest bet to stay, especially since he was the one who started the new season in the first place. This leaves one half of the central pair, Fleming or Arnott, potentially on the chopping block. Their close bond has been a cornerstone of the show, but both the BBC and Mercurio will likely aim for reinvention to restore momentum and raise the stakes. With new beginnings comes risk, and line of duty Never backed down from a grave demise. He

The real ‘H’ will come out

While many fans would probably prefer that this storyline be left to die like one of the show’s many guest stars, there may still be life in the old girl. The season six finale was a huge anticlimax for many viewers, as it was finally revealed that “H” – the criminal mastermind who was literally shrouded in mystery for years – was a very forgettable minor character, former Detective Superintendent Ian Buckles. Even Dunbar later said that Buckels was simply a “patsy”, mistaking the hit for the real “H”. “We’ve just found someone we can actually charge,” he said. “He’s a distraction.” So, can Mercurio use this seventh season to right the mistakes of last season, and give fans the big honor they’ve been waiting for? And who could it be, the police or someone at the upper levels of the government? eh
