A yellow warning for snow and ice is in force from midday on Friday and has been extended until 3pm on Saturday, with further snow likely to fall in parts of northern England and much of Scotland, while widespread ice and snow risks are expected to cause damage.

Much of England and Wales will be under a separate yellow warning for ice from midday on Friday until midday on Saturday, with some melted snow set to refreeze, accompanied by wintry showers and freezing fog.

In Northern Ireland, a yellow warning for snow and ice will come into force from 5pm on Friday until 11am on Saturday, with the Met Office warning of ice, snow and some mountain snow.

A yellow weather warning for ice and snow has also been issued for parts of Scotland, northern England and the Midlands on Sunday. The Met Office said up to 30cm of snow was possible in parts of the affected area, with 5cm more likely.

Forecasters said bands of snow would move through the warning area on Sunday morning, with the highlands most likely to see the heaviest snowfall again.

Temperatures are expected to be well above freezing in most of the affected areas, around 2 degrees Celsius.

People are being urged to plan their travel routes in advance as heavy snow could bring “possible delays”, stranding people and vehicles. The Met Office also told residents in affected areas to prepare for possible power outages, which it said could also affect mobile phone coverage.
