As Bihar is preparing for its newly elected 243 MLAs, people’s curiosity has once again turned towards how much an MLA earns and what are the benefits associated with the post.
According to Navbharat Times (NBT), Bihar is one of the top states in the country in terms of legislative salaries, jointly ranked fifth with Karnataka.
In the new Assembly term starting this month, for the first time MLAs, many of whom have come to the House with promises of development and regional upliftment, will receive a structured salary package along with several allowances.
According to NBT, the basic monthly salary of a Bihar MLA is ₹50,000, with constituency allowance of ₹55,000, personal assistant allowance of ₹40,000 and stationery allowance of ₹15,000.
During assembly sessions or committee meetings, members get an additional ₹3,000 per day, which adds substantially to their monthly take-home amount.
Apart from salary, MLAs also receive a variety of facilities which vary significantly across Indian states. MLAs in Bihar also reportedly get an annual travel coupon of ₹4 lakh for air and rail travel, which can also be used by their family members.
To support mobility in their constituencies, they are eligible for vehicle loans up to ₹25 lakh at concessional interest rates. He and his family are provided free medical treatment in recognized hospitals as well as accommodation in government quarters in Patna. Electricity, water and telephone bills are heavily subsidized.
The benefits do not end with tenure. Once an MLA completes a five-year tenure, the Bihar government provides a monthly pension of ₹45,000, ensuring financial security after retirement. Like salaries, such pension structures vary widely across India.
Across India, Telangana tops the list with an MLA salary of ₹2.5 lakh per month, followed by Delhi at ₹2.25 lakh, Maharashtra at ₹2 lakh and Uttar Pradesh at ₹1.87 lakh. At the bottom of the chart is Kerala, where MLAs get ₹70,000 per month.
