One Arizona A man was sentenced to death Thursday in a series of deadly subway shootings surprise During a three-week period in 2017.
Cleophus Cooksey Jr., 43, was found guilty of eight murders in late September. Jurors agreed on the death penalty for six murders, but they were undecided on death sentences for Cooksey’s mother, Renee Cooksey, and stepfather, Edward Nunn.
Prosecutors said they could seek the death penalty in a retrial or have the judge impose a life sentence.
Authorities never disclosed a motive for the attacks. Cooksey maintained his innocence throughout the month-long trial.

Andrew Remillard, 27, and Parker Smith, 21, were found dead with gunshot wounds to the head inside a parked car in Phoenix.
December 2, 2017
Salim Richards, 31, was shot and killed while walking in west Phoenix. His 9mm Glock handgun and a necklace are missing.
December 13, 2017
Latori Beckford, 29, was found shot twice in the head in the common area glendale apartment complex.
December 15, 2017
Police say 21-year-old Christopher Cameron was shot and killed after arriving at a Glendale apartment complex to complete a drug transaction with Cooksey.

About 90 minutes after Cameron was shot, 43-year-old Maria Villanueva parked her car at another complex 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) away. Surveillance cameras show an unknown man approach her and then drive away with her in the front passenger seat of Villanueva’s car. She was found partially naked and shot to death in a Phoenix street the next morning.

Police Responding to a shooting at a central Phoenix apartment, found Cooksey on the scene and, after a brief altercation, took him into custody. They found the bodies of her mother, 56-year-old Renee Cooksey, and her 54-year-old husband, Edward Nunn, behind the front door. Both were shot dead.
Investigators said they found Richards’ gun, which was later linked to the murders of Beckford, Cameron and Villanueva. Villanueva’s vehicle keys were also found there, and police say Cooksey was wearing Richards’ necklace when she was arrested.
