What is the current status of the Shinkansen?Railway Minister shares major update

New Delhi:

India’s high-speed rail project is progressing well and the first corridor from Mumbai to Ahmedabad will integrate economies, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said today as she won the NDTV India of the Year Award.

“High-speed rail projects must be viewed from the perspective of an integrated economy. Among the first corridors being built by Indian Railways, Mumbai, Thane, Vapi, Vadodara, Surat, Anand and Ahmedabad – All these economies will become one economy. So you can have breakfast in Surat and then go to Mumbai to complete your work and come back in the evening with your family,” Ashwini

“Where most high-speed rail projects have been implemented, they account for 90 percent of the traffic,” Mr. Vishnu asked whether high-speed rail would be cheaper than air tickets.

Since the commencement of construction in November 2021, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor has been making steady progress. The first kilometer of the viaduct was built within six months, with the 50th kilometer completed in April 2023.

Besides, bridges have been constructed on eight rivers as part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, Mr. Vaishnaw said today.

The estimated cost is Rs 108 crore, of which the Center has pledged Rs 10,000 crore and Gujarat and Maharashtra will provide Rs 5,000 crore each. The remaining funds will be obtained through Japanese loans – with interest rates starting at 0.1%.
