grey and sad Season This autumn has been tireless, but a meteorological phenomenon What is known as “anticyclonic gloom” may be responsible for this.
This high pressure system is installed dominate the weather for the coming week, meaning there will be a lack of blue sky And the sun.
It is not unusual for the UK to experience anticyclonic depressions, especially in the autumn months.
This occurs when a high pressure system, or anticyclone, becomes stationary over the country. weather office Explains.
During periods of high pressure, the air sinks toward the ground, which can trap a thin layer of moisture or low cloud near the surface – sometimes accompanied by drizzle.

This is less common in the summer months when the sun is strong enough to break through the low clouds and into the clear air above.
But in October, the sun’s strength diminishes, meaning the low-lying clouds remain stubbornly in place. This, combined with the lack of air from the high pressure area, leads to grey, cloudy conditions.
During anticyclonic depressions, clouds can also thicken as moisture condenses, triggering drizzle.
This weather phenomenon can also increase the level of pollution because it also gets trapped. The Great Smog of 1952, which blanketed London in a dense fog so polluted that thousands died, was an extreme example.
Although much of the UK is stuck under gray skies, people living on higher ground such as the Pennines and Scottish Highlands can escape into the clear air above the low clouds.
The Met Office said these areas saw exceptionally low humidity, compared to just 4 per cent recorded in the Pennines earlier this week, and beautiful, clear skies.
The rest of the UK, especially the south, western England, western Wales and northern Scotland, will have to wait until Friday to see some breaking in the clouds.
High pressure is set to slowly move into the North Sea over the weekend, bringing winds from the south which will bring a bit more wind and perhaps areas of low depression overnight where clear spells will develop.
Saturday is expected to be another generally dry day, but there are signs of a change on the horizon with wet and windy weather coming in from the west from Sunday.
