Kolkata, October 9 (IANS) Two more people were arrested on Thursday in connection with the attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu, taking the total number of arrests in the case to four.
Nagarakata police in Jalpaiguri district on Wednesday arrested two people in connection with the attack on Murmu and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh on Monday. The names of the arrested persons were not disclosed.
Earlier this morning, two more people were arrested following an overnight search operation. This time the police said that the arrested people have been identified as Shahnoor Alam and Tofayen Hussain.
All the arrested people will be produced in the district court today during the day where the police will seek their custody.
A senior Jalpaiguri district police official said, “Two more were arrested today. A total of four people have been arrested in connection with the attack on BJP leaders on Monday. The search is on for other accused in the case.”
Murmu and BJP MLA Ghosh faced opposition last Monday when they had gone to Nagrakata to provide relief in the flood-hit area.
A large number of people attacked BJP leaders with sticks and shoes. Stones were picked up from the river and thrown at his car.
Murmu suffered serious injuries on his face. Later both the leaders were admitted to the hospital for treatment.
Though Ghosh was discharged on Wednesday, Murmu will undergo facial surgery and is likely to have a metal plate implanted in his left cheekbone.
The BJP had filed a complaint against eight people at Nagarakata police station in Jalpaiguri district and protested outside the police station demanding action against the accused.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari and others met Murmu in the hospital.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju had criticized the Mamata Banerjee government regarding the attack. The Union Minister said that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has sought an immediate report from the Bengal government on the attack.
