Kolkata, Oct 29 (IANS) The office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal has decided to seek a report from the District Magistrate of South 24 Parganas regarding the claim that a woman councilor of Trinamool Congress allegedly has two voter ID cards from different assembly constituencies.
Sources in the CEO office said that after receiving the detailed report on the matter from the District Magistrate as well as the District Election Officer, CEO Manoj Kumar Aggarwal will give necessary instructions on the steps to be taken in this matter.
Sources in the CEO office said that there is every possibility that a notice will be sent to the concerned Trinamool Congress councilor seeking clarification in the matter and necessary action will be taken based on his response.
Sources in the CEO office said, “The Election Commission of India has laid special emphasis on removing names of dead voters and duplicate voters from the voter list this time during special intensive vetting. Therefore, as per the instructions of the Commission, the CEO office is taking every highlighted case of duplicate voters very seriously.”
The Trinamool Congress MLA who has reportedly registered her name in the voter list of two constituencies, Baruipur West and Kultali, in South 24 Parganas district is Namita Sardar, who is the sitting councilor from Ward No. 7 of Baruipur Municipality from the same district.
Her husband, Biwas Sardar, is a Trinamool Congress MLA from Baruipur (East) assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas.
The matter was brought to the notice of the ECI by Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, who also submitted supporting documents related to the case.
The officer had also requested the commission to immediately cancel Sardar’s other voter ID cards and register an FIR against him for violating election laws.
On Tuesday, Adhikari shared information that Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor’s name is listed in Bihar’s Rohtas district, under Kargahar Assembly constituency (209) and Rohtas Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar and Bhabanipur Assembly constituency (159) and Kolkata (Dakshin) Lok Sabha constituency (23) in West Bengal.
