West Bend Diverts Food West and Fights Food Insecurity at West-U-U-Can Grocery Shop

A unique grocery store in the West Bend is making sure that every size and size yield is finished on a table instead of a landfill through its pay-What-U-Can model.

According to city data, Toronto produces houses 99,000 tons Every year food wastage and more than 50 percent of it is avoidable.

However, where does the waste of food come from? For individuals, it is usually caused by more purchases and misunderstandings, while for producers, it is due to odd size yield and bottom-standard packaging.

While all this food is being wasted, some residents of the city cannot enough the risk of feeding themselves.

In December 2024, the city council declared food insecurity in Toronto as an emergency. Around 25 percent of Torontonians are unsafe and have more risk for low -income, racial and 2slgbtqia+ individuals.

So residents in West Bend are dealing with two problems with a store – Feed it forwardPay-What-U-Cain grocery store uses additional and rejected yields to reduce food waste and address food insecurity.

“It’s unfortunate that the way our current grocery system and modern production is the way [works]This is just a scalability thing. They make food n masss, without knowing whether it will actually be used, and then when it may not happen [be used] Due to the best before dates, meanwhile it is still good, they cannot sell it in traditional ways, ”CEO Carson Foster shared.

Feed it forward is a non-profit organization that runs both a grocery store and A. Free food-sharing appThe store collects additional yield from high quality, restaurants, farms and retailers to sell at cheap prices or give free to needy people.

Meanwhile, the app empowers the locals to share their extra by uploading details at the type of food and pick-up location.

Zack B, Store Manager at Feed It Forward tells the green line that he has seen a shop of separate people in the store, who wants to be socially responsible and bends food waste away from the landfill, which do not have regular grocery items.

“You will be surprised how much throat I become alone, just like people, ‘Oh man I never knew such a place,” and you met people who are below their final dollar. “

“There is a social perception as well as about buying food which is about second hand, even though it is not really second -hand food and we live in a world where we like our grocery items, when we buy them. But if you have ever been in nature or work in a field or do anything, then you do not know that things do not grow completely,” said a proposal in the west.

It aims to create a socially responsible neighborhood that removes food from the landfill and helps to remove the neighbor in needs. Non-profit will resume its app in December, making it more user friendly and easy access.
