Weather Update: Orange alert of fog in UP and MP; Yellow alert of cold wave in Telangana, Karnataka

Dense blanket of dense fog has hit many parts of India, forcing weather officials to issue orange and yellow alerts in several states.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for ‘very dense fog’ in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Yellow alert of dense fog has been issued for Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Odisha and North-Eastern states.

The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for thunderstorm and lightning in Tamil Nadu and a cold wave alert for parts of Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.

In a post on Twitter, the weather agency said, “Dense to very dense fog is very likely over isolated areas of Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh during the morning hours of December 17. Dense fog is also very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, West Madhya Pradesh, West Rajasthan and Odisha.”

Delhi is expected to have mainly clear skies over the next few days with widespread fog in the morning hours, light fog at many places and moderate fog at isolated places.

The temperature is expected to reach maximum 23 to 25 degrees Celsius and minimum 9 to 11 degrees Celsius. According to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the average AQI was recorded at 327 at around 9 am in the national capital, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category.

dense fog

Extensive fog conditions will affect many areas from 17 to 21 December, with very dense fog likely over parts of Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh on 17 and 18 December.

Dense fog is also forecast over isolated parts of Northeast (from 17 to 21 December), Punjab (from 17 to 20 December), Haryana and Chandigarh (from 18 to 20 December) and Himachal Pradesh (from 17, 18, 19 December). Apart from this, there will be dense fog in isolated areas of Uttarakhand, West Madhya Pradesh and Odisha on December 17 and 18.

“Dense fog very likely over isolated parts of Uttar Pradesh during 17 to 20 December and over isolated parts of Madhya Pradesh during 17 to 19 December; very dense fog over isolated parts of East Madhya Pradesh on 17 and 18 December; very dense fog over isolated places over East Madhya Pradesh on 17 and 18 December,” the IMD said.

Cold wave conditions are likely to persist at isolated places over Telangana, North Interior Karnataka and West Madhya Pradesh on December 17 and 18.

Thunderstorm and lightning in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry

On December 17, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely at isolated places over Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

Rain/snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh

According to IMD, light rain and snowfall is expected at isolated places in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan and Muzaffarabad between December 18 and 22. After this, this weather pattern will spread to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on 20th and 21st December, after which there will be rain in Uttarakhand also on 21st December.

minimum temperature

There will be no significant change in minimum temperatures across northwest India for the next three days and will gradually increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next four days. Gujarat will not see any significant change in the next 24 hours, followed by a rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius in the next three days, followed by stability. In the rest of the country, minimum temperatures are expected to remain constant for the next seven days.
