Weather Update: Cold wave alert in Himachal, Haryana and Punjab; Fog expected in some parts of UP

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning for sub-zero temperatures, dense fog and freezing cold at night as a severe cold wave hit most parts of North India on December 11. According to the IMD statement, cold wave conditions will persist in central, eastern and northern peninsular India till December 12.

According to IMD guidelines, there is a possibility of severe fog over northeastern Uttar Pradesh on the evening and morning of December 11. Severe fog is also likely in many parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha and Uttarakhand. The IMD issued an alert advising people and travelers to use low beam or fog lights while driving, avoid unnecessary travel during extreme fog and exercise caution.

parts of North India Fog will continue to be experienced, which may make it difficult for early morning commuters. The weather agency has advised people to limit their outdoor activities in the early morning hours, stay warm and take appropriate health measures. People with respiratory problems, the elderly and children are especially at risk during this period.

Cold wave alert in MP-Maharashtra

Large parts of the country including western Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and northern Odisha were affected by the severe cold wave on Wednesday. It also expanded to northern areas like Punjab and Haryana.

It is likely to worsen over states including Haryana, Delhi, northwest Rajasthan and parts of Maharashtra on 11 and 12 December.

Extreme cold in Punjab-Haryana

It is extremely cold in Punjab and Haryana. With a minimum temperature of 3.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, Rupnagar was the coldest place in the two adjoining states. The Meteorological Department said that the minimum temperature was recorded at 6.1 degrees Celsius in Amritsar, 9.2 degrees Celsius in Ludhiana and 10.1 degrees Celsius in Patiala.

Chandigarh has also been affected by the cold wave with a temperature of 8.6 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature in Haryana was 6.7 degrees Celsius in Hisar and 10.9 degrees Celsius in Ambala.

Dense fog in north-eastern areas

Apart from cold, heavy fog has also been predicted in many states as early as Thursday. IMD has warned of possible dense fog over Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and other northeastern regions including Assam and Manipur from December 9 to 13.

Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh

There is a possibility of cold wave in Uttarakhand, where dry weather is being reported in every district. Change in weather may be seen once again in Himachal Pradesh.

Due to the active Western Disturbance, there is a possibility of light rain and snowfall in the state.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in 13 areas of the state is below 5 degrees Celsius. IMD has issued yellow alert in both the states.
