Weather Update: Andhra Pradesh, Odisha on high alert as Cyclone Montha approaches

As Cyclone Montha prepares to make landfall, several states in India have started evacuating their coastal districts.

Cyclone Montha A powerful cyclonic storm has formed over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted strong winds and heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in both inland and coastal areas.

Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) said the storm system is intensifying with a speed of 18 km per hour, and light to moderate rain has started over the coastal areas.

Andhra Pradesh on red alert

Cyclone Montha Landfall is predicted in Andhra Pradesh on the coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada on October 28.

According to IMD officials, most coastal areas will experience strong winds of 90 to 110 kmph and extremely heavy rainfall. Coastal areas like Konaseema, Visakhapatnam and Kakinada are on high alert.

Odisha and Telangana are also on high alert

IMD has issued orange and red alert for heavy rain in Odisha, Telangana and adjoining areas from October 28 to 30. Strong winds and heavy rain have been predicted in Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Jayashankar Bhoopalpally districts of Telangana. A red alert has been issued for eight southern districts of Odisha: Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangapur, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi and Kandhamal.

Heavy rain in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet and Kanchipuram are among the northern regions of Tamil Nadu that have already received heavy rains. Although significant damage is not expected within the state, the local weather service warned that rainfall could continue.

IMD has advised fishermen to avoid going out to sea till October 29 due to strong surface winds and rough sea.

Light to moderate rain in Karnataka

Orange alert has been issued in Karnataka due to heavy rain, storm and winds with speed of 30 to 40 km/hr, especially along the coast (Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi). While Bengaluru is expected to receive light to moderate rain, yellow alert is in effect for northern inland districts including Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Vijayapura and Yadgir.

Mid-North Weather Update

The impact of Cyclone Montha is spreading far beyond the coast. In Uttar Pradesh, thunderstorm and light rain is expected in the following districts: Banda, Hamirpur, Lalitpur, Jhansi, Mahoba, Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Fatehpur, Auraiya, Etawah, Firozabad, Mainpuri and Agra. Day and night temperatures have also dropped due to cloudy sky and drizzle.

Temperature is continuously falling in Rajasthan Cyclone MonthaIts effect spread and light to moderate rain has started in 23 districts including Jaipur. As the remnants of Montha move north, the National Capital Region around Delhi is also experiencing gloomy skies and drizzle.

Other states and flood/alert concerns

There is a rain warning in West Bengal, with 7-20 cm of rain expected in many districts including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Malda between Tuesday and Friday.

Vidarbha region of Maharashtra (Nagpur, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, etc.) is expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and gusty winds (40-50 km/hr) from October 28 to 30. Yellow alert has been issued for Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Wardha, Washim, Bhandara, Yavatmal, Gondia and districts. Nagpur.
