Chennai, Nov 5 (IANS) An alert has been issued for seven districts of Tamil Nadu as a depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal off the Andhra Pradesh coast is affecting the weather in the state, causing heavy rains and widespread disruption.
Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), Chennai, said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Tiruchirappalli districts in the next 24 hours.
The weather system hovering near the Andhra coast has caused moist easterly winds and intense cloud formation over the coastal and delta areas.
The RMC has also predicted heavy rain in Perambalur, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Salem and Dharmapuri districts on Thursday. Chennai had cloudy skies and intermittent drizzle throughout the day, before sudden heavy rain in the evening led to severe waterlogging and traffic jams in many parts of the city.
Areas like Guindy, Meenambakkam, Alwarpet, Nungambakkam and Koyambedu received heavy rainfall, disrupting traffic in the evening as office-goers started going home. The suburbs bore the brunt of the heavy rain. Alandur, Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram and Vandalur received heavy rains resulting in waterlogging of major stretches of GST Road. In Perungalathur, traffic came to a standstill as vehicles moved slowly on submerged roads, while in Selayur, accumulation of rain water caused major inconvenience to motorists.
Further north and west, Poonamallee, Chembarambakkam, Chenirkuppam and Vellapanthavady received heavy rains, leaving knee-deep waterlogging in many parts. On Vellapanthavady service road, waterlogging was so severe that more than 300 sand bags were placed in front of a lorry showroom to prevent flooding.
In the delta region, areas like Old Bus Stand, South Road, Vijaya Puram and Valavakkal in Tiruvarur received heavy rainfall for more than an hour accompanied by strong winds.
Farmers expressed concern as the fresh rains once again submerged paddy fields, which were treated by draining them after earlier rains.
The RMC has urged residents of coastal and delta districts to remain alert and avoid waterlogged areas, warning that the depression may cause moderate to heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the coming days.
