On 25 June 1975, the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued an emergency announcement under Article 352 citing dangers from internal disturbances. The Emergency was declared in the backdrop of growing political unrest and judicial development which shaken the validity of the ruling leadership.
The decision followed a press note from the government, alleging that the orders were abused to incite the police and the armed forces.
It marked the third emergency in the history of India, but the first one declared in peacock. The first announcements were during wars with China (1962) and Pakistan (1971). (AI)
