A truly great pie depends on the details – the quality of the pastry, the hearty filling (no stinginess, please) and, of course, the taste. How we tested
We bought nine different mincemeat pies (hard work, we know) from major UK supermarkets. This included premium options from Waitrose and M&S, as well as budget-friendly options from Lidl and Asda. Each mincemeat pie was taste-tested blindly, and evaluated on flavour, appearance, texture and – an important factor when choosing the best mincemeat pie – filling-to-pastry ratio.

With nutritious brown-butter pastry and a filling that strikes the perfect balance between sweet and boozy, these were dubbed the best supermarket mince pies – our testers unanimously agreed.

We have to mention these Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Mince Pies. The ‘all butter’ pastry really lived up to its description – it was rich, golden, and had just the right amount of flavour. Our testers loved the intricate design (perfect for plating at Christmas parties) as well as the rich, brandy-infused filling.
