Yes, in the name of investigative journalism, the IndieBest team spent an afternoon tasting mince pies from various supermarkets to find our winners for 2025.

And there are now more mincemeat pie iterations than ever before, from crumble-topped recipes to mincemeat pies that include sweet frangipane, or those made with puff pastry instead of the typical shortcrust.
To help you choose which pie to buy, our team of experts tasted and rated offerings from all the major supermarkets including Asda, M&S and Lidl. Some were mediocre, others really charmed us. But one supermarket really stood out from the rest.

How we tested
We bought nine different mincemeat pies (hard work, we know) from major UK supermarkets. This included premium options from Waitrose and M&S, as well as budget-friendly options from Lidl and Asda. Each mincemeat pie was taste-tested blindly, and evaluated on flavour, appearance, texture and – an important factor when choosing the best mincemeat pie – filling-to-pastry ratio.

With nutritious brown-butter pastry and a filling that strikes the perfect balance between sweet and boozy, these were dubbed the best supermarket mince pies – our testers unanimously agreed.
Festive pies only come in packs of two, so are a little more expensive than most supermarket options, which usually come in packs of six or four. However, if you’re looking for delicious mince pies with deep fillings and pastries with homemade flavour, you can’t go wrong with these star-topped dishes from Morrisons.

We have to mention these Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Mince Pies. The ‘all butter’ pastry really lived up to its description – it was rich, golden, and had just the right amount of flavour. Our testers loved the intricate design (perfect for plating at Christmas parties) as well as the rich, brandy-infused filling.
