Wayne Rooney have defended EnglandAfter the so-called “golden generation” Steven Gerrard Calling them “arrogant losers”, the former Manchester United striker insisted that “we tried”.
Both Rooney and Gerrard played six major tournaments for England, but failed to go beyond the quarter-finals at the World Cup and Euros despite a team studded with stars such as Frank Lampard, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole.
Gerrard told former England teammate Ferdinand the reason the Three Lions never won anything was due to a lack of cohesion off the pitch, the former Liverpool captain reveals That club faction held the national team back,

“It depended on the culture of England,” Gerrard said. Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast“We weren’t friendly or connected. We weren’t a team. We never really became a good, strong team at any level.”
However, Rooney said it was not that simple. “Obviously, we didn’t win anything,” he said. the wayne rooney show,
“I wouldn’t put it that way but I know what he’s saying. There were a lot of big characters in the dressing room.
“I wouldn’t say [England squads now have a] Better attitude. It’s insulting to us as players because we worked hard, we tried. We were not completely successful in doing this.
“Even when you look back at the players we had, could we have performed better? We could have but we didn’t.”
Rooney agreed with Gerrard that it is easier to remain friendly off the field, now that his days of representing Manchester United and Liverpool on the field are behind him.
“I talk to Steven all the time,” Rooney said. “Now your relationship can be better because you can have a beer together and be more relaxed.
“I was okay with everybody, I got along with everybody. I knew about Bex [David Beckham] and gary neville and scolecy [Paul Scholes]You could see they weren’t getting close to the Liverpool players.
“But one thing’s for sure, everyone played hard for each other. I don’t think that was an issue. We just weren’t able to cross the line. I didn’t see that at all.”
