The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is tracking the epic flight. The command center monitors everything in the skies over the US and Canada but during Christmas it is given an extra important job.
This tradition first began in 1955 when a child accidentally called the Colorado Military Command asking to speak to Father Christmas – after a local newspaper published an advertisement by a department store containing an incorrect phone number.
Air Force Commander Harry Shoup, who was manning the phones on Christmas Eve, immediately noticed the mistake and reassured the child that he was indeed Santa Claus and was on his way.
That night more and more calls came in, so Commander Shoup assigned a duty officer to the phones. Since then, the command center has operated a special mission dedicated to keeping an eye on Father Christmas on the big night.
