Qadir Tola said he was on his way to meet a client when he said the car was on fire.
“He (the driver) woke up. He said pull me out, pull me out, pull me out,” he told fox news.
“One day, this could be me. What would happen if I were in that situation and my life was in the hands of strangers I didn’t even know,” Mr. Tola added.
He said bystanders frantically tried to free the driver. But the door was blocked by a guardrail.
“The flames were literally hitting us in the face, but we just jumped back,” Mr Tola said.
After some time, he grabbed a piece of discarded plastic and tried to break the window, but failed. Eventually, a highway worker broke the glass and bystanders pulled the man to safety.
“When we got him out, the fire started spreading from the driver’s side into the car. I’m glad he got out in time,” Mr Tola said.
He is grateful that he is able to lend a helping hand to those in need.
“It was like the scariest moment of my life. It’s something I’ll never forget. I’ll always remember this,” Mr Tola said.
The driver was not seriously injured although paramedics transported him to an area hospital for a medical evaluation, police said.
