War between uncles and nephews is old in Maharashtra, from Thackeray to Pawar families face to face

Web Desk, 30/10/202430/10/2024

The war between uncles and nephews has a long history in Maharashtra.

All eyes are on the Baramati seat in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The electoral battle between Ajit Pawar and Yugendra Pawar for the Baramati assembly seat is being seen as an uncle versus nephew contest. Not only this, his nephew Sameer Bhujbal also fought against Chhagan Bhujwal. This is not the first time that uncle and nephew have gone head-to-head in Maharashtra politics, but the political chessboard has been laid out many times. From the Thackerays to the Pawars to the Bhujbals and Mundees, political rivalries between uncles and nephews have occurred from time to time.

Politics in Maharashtra revolves around many political families. This time too, many political parties did not hesitate to provide election tickets to the children of their leaders. The result was a fight between uncles and nephews in many seats where dynastic leaders were trying their luck. In this way, the dominance of family leaders is clearly visible in Maharashtra. Among them, a face-to-face fight took place between uncle and nephew on Baramati and Nandgaon seats.

Uncles and nephews of the Pawar family

NCP chief and Maharashtra deputy minister Ajit Pawar is contesting from the Baramati seat again. Sharad Pawar fielded Yugendra Pawar, son of his elder brother Srinivas Pawar, as a candidate against Ajit. In this way, the election in Baramati became a competition between uncle and nephew. Ajit Pawar faces the challenge of maintaining his political dominance in Baramati constituency of Pune district, while on the other hand, political debutant Yogendra Pawar faces the challenge of living up to Sharad Pawar Val expected a challenge.

Ajit Pawar entered politics through the influence of his uncle Sharad Pawar. The uncles advanced with the support of Sharad Pawar but were opposed to each other in their political ambitions. When Sharad Pawar proposed his daughter Supriya Sule as his political heir, Ajit Pawar adopted a rebellious attitude. Sharad Pawar formed the NCP after breaking away from the Congress, but Ajit wrested the party and the MLAs from his uncle last year. In this way, Ajit and his supporters went hand in hand with the BJP. The result was that Sharad Pawar had to form his own independent party. That’s why Ajit Pawar had to compete with his own nephew.

Nephew Sameer in front of Chagan Bhujbal

In Maharashtra politics, senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal is considered a senior leader of the OBC community. Chagan is considered a leader close to former Prime Minister Sharad Pawar, but along with Ajit he also raised the flag of rebellion. Moved out Sharad Pawar and joined Ajit Pawar. When Chhagan Bhujbal contests again from the Nandgaon assembly seat, he faces a political challenge from his nephew. Chhagan’s nephew Sameer Bhujbal has contested from Nandgaon seat as an independent candidate. Chagan then said that the DNA of all the nephews was the same.

After separating from the Shiv Sena, Raj Thackeray formed his own party under the name of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. This is how the fight between uncles and nephews in the Thackeray family began. When Uddhav Thackeray brought his son Aditya Thackeray into politics, things turned into a showdown between Raj Thackeray and Aditya Thackeray. Just like that, it turned into a fight between uncle and nephew. Now, Raj Thackeray has fielded his son Amit Thackeray from Mahim seat while Uddhav Thackeray Thackeray also selected his candidate. Once Gopinath Munde died, Dhananjay Munde took a different political path. In 2019, Dhananjay contested the assembly elections against Pankaja Munde and won, becoming a MLA. Not only this, Gopinath also tried to establish himself as Munde’s political heir.
