Walmart has signed a deal for a second office location in the southern Indian city of Chennai, which is emerging as a major technology center as a manufacturing center for years.
Global companies are setting up local hubs in India to support their daily operations, research and development and cyber security, which has benefited commercial real estate developers in cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune.
Chennai is traditionally known for being a manufacturing hub, now looking at global corporate interests in setting up tech hubs from major companies such as Astrazheneka, UPS and Fizer.
Walmart leased an area of over 465,000 square feet on Wednesday, according to a document viewed by Reuters – broadly the size of eight football areas – for an early period of five years, starting from November this, starting from November.
Although Walmart does not yet run a supermarket in India, it has technical offices in cities like Chennai and Bengaluru. The Bengaluru office, which appoints 8,000 workers, is its largest tech hub globally.
