Seid told The Associated Press that there was no previous record of an eruption at the Hayeli Gubbi volcano, and he feared for the livelihoods of residents.
He said, “Although there has been no loss of human life or livestock so far, many villages have been covered in ash and their animals have little to eat as a result.”

The Afar region is sensitive to earthquakes and one resident, Ahmed Abdellah, said he heard a loud noise and what he described as a shock wave.

The village near the Danakil Desert, which is a tourist attraction, was still covered in ash on Monday and tourists and guides heading to the desert were stranded in the village, according to Abdella.
