New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to famous social worker and politician Nanaji Deshmukh on his birth anniversary. Describing him as a visionary social reformer, nation builder and a lifelong supporter of self-reliance and rural empowerment, PM Modi acknowledged his immense contribution to the society.
Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi shared a tribute video with an emotional caption.
He posted, “Tributes to the great Nanaji Deshmukh on his birth anniversary. He was a visionary social reformer, nation builder and a lifelong advocate of self-reliance and rural empowerment. His life was an epitome of dedication, discipline and service to the society.”
In the video, PM Modi highlighted Deshmukh’s lifelong struggle and commitment to national service.
PM Modi said, “Nanaji Deshmukh lived his entire life for the country. Through the Deendayal Upadhyay Institute, he inspired many people to live and serve the country. He invited young couples to contribute and hundreds of people came forward. He involved them in the development of villages.”
Referring to his ideals and choices, the Prime Minister said:
“Following in the footsteps of JP Narayan, he rejected any cabinet post. He focused on Chitrakoot and Gonda, devoting three decades of his life to their development.”
In another post on X, PM Modi shared a press statement of the ‘Janata Party’ from 1978 with the caption, “Nanaji Deshmukh was deeply inspired by Loknayak JP. His reverence for JP and his vision for youth development, service and nation-building can be seen in the message he shared as the General Secretary of the Janata Party.”
Born on October 11, 1916 in Hingoli district of Maharashtra, Nanaji Deshmukh was a prominent social reformer and politician who focused on education, healthcare and rural self-reliance. He was inspired by the nationalist ideology of Lokmanya Tilak and the founding chief of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Keshav Baliram Hedgewar.
A stalwart in the Indian social and political circles, Deshmukh left an indelible mark on the country’s development landscape. His life’s work was based on the principle of “Antyodaya” – the upliftment of the last man in the society. He embodied this through his tireless commitment towards “Gramodaya” – holistic development of villages.
His principles, initiative and unwavering dedication inspire generations to work towards a society where every individual can live a dignified and fulfilled life.
Nanaji Deshmukh championed the empowerment of rural communities, recognizing that real progress requires integrated development—education, health care, economic growth and sustainability. He believed that self-reliance was important and saw villages as self-reliant entities capable of overcoming poverty and underdevelopment.
