Virgil van Dijk expressed his frustration at not being called for a foul during the goal-challenge which ended the game. Bournemouth beat Liverpool in 95th minute.

The Reds captain felt he was blocked before Amin Adderley curled the ball past Alisson and into the net to give the Cherries all three points. Liverpool tied with two goals in vain.

“My feeling in that game was that I was blocked but the referee and VAR didn’t give it,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

I can stand here and say, it’s not supposed to be given, so it is what it is. “

Pundit and former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp responded, stressing that Van Dijk was actually being thwarted by his teammates.

“He’s blocked, he’s fouled, but it’s his own player: Curtis Jones,” Redknapp said.

“Virgil was in a good position but when the ball came in it was an unbelievable pass and he went to attack it.

“Jones, when he went to win the game, he tripped him. Then it all became Adderley’s problem. He was smart. He was the only one alive in this situation.”

Reds coach Arne Slott also had heated interactions with the referee throughout the game, but the Dutchman later clarified that this was due to the length of second-half stoppage time, which was only four minutes.

“For me, four minutes of stoppage time wasn’t enough, but in the end it didn’t matter because they scored,” Slaughter said. “While we could have had two or three minutes, this game shouldn’t have had four minutes of overtime.

“There was already a free kick that took two or three minutes, there was a VAR moment, there were substitutions. That’s what I said to them, four minutes is not enough.

“We were down to 10 men and then they scored the second goal, which was the only few minutes since the last 10 minutes where we had some problems. But it ended up being another defeat.”
