New Delhi:
Former British Prime Minister David Cameron has been criticized for his “double standards” regarding the conflict between Iran and Israel. The British foreign secretary condemned Iran’s drone and missile attacks on Israel in a television interview, but added that Britain would respond similarly if its consulate was attacked.
Iran launched a series of explosive drones and missiles late Saturday, directly targeting Israeli territory, in response to the bombing of its embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus earlier this month that killed seven people, including three Senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps official) commander.
Cameron said in an interview that countries should use strategic thinking to deal with such provocations.
“I completely understand that the Israelis want to see more (action) but I think now is the time to think with your head and your heart and be smart but also tough,” Cameron told Sky News. “I think it’s sensible The approach is really to recognize that the Iranian attack was a failure, and we want to continue to focus on that, focus on Iran’s malign influence, and really focus on what’s going on in Gaza.”

Asked how the UK would react if a British consulate was “razed to the ground”, Cameron said, “We will take very strong action.” However, the 57-year-old added disclaimer, saying there was a “huge difference” between what Israel was doing in Damascus and Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israeli soil. Israel has categorically denied any involvement in the April 1 bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
“I completely understand the frustration that Israelis feel when they see the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and the horrific things they are doing around the world, including their support for Hamas,” Cameron said.
“I think there is a huge difference between what Israel did in Damascus and the 301 weapons that Iran fired at Israel. This was the first state-to-state attack, 101 ballistic missiles, 36 cruise missiles, 185 Drones, that’s a certain level of difference, and I think what Iran is doing is reckless and dangerous,” he added.
Shortly after Cameron made his comments, people took to social media to criticize him for his double standards.
While the United Nations has called for peace and restraint, Israel has pledged to “demand a price” from Iran at the appropriate time.
