Peshawar: Two people were killed in new shootings, taking the death toll from violence to 122, despite a ceasefire between Sunni and Shiite communities in different parts of Pakistan’s restive northwestern Kurram district . Police and hospital officials provided the information Friday.
The violence began last week
Violence between the Sunni and Shiite communities began last week and skirmishes continue despite a ceasefire. Two people were killed and six others were injured Thursday in another shooting incident between two communities. Following the violence, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi on Friday asked Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur to visit the disturbed areas.

Let us tell you that on November 21, a passenger van was ambushed near Parajinar in Kurram district bordering Afghanistan and the next day, one of the Alizai and Bagan tribesmen of the district Violence broke out. The bus attack killed 47 people. Many passengers who were seriously injured in the attack died during treatment, bringing the death toll from the attack to 57. On Friday and Saturday, violent clashes broke out between two communities in the Bagan Bazaar area, killing at least 37 people and injuring many others. Soon thereafter, violence spread to other parts of the region, including Balishkhel, Khar, Kali, Junj Alizai and Maqbal.

Violence continues even after ceasefire
Police and hospital sources said at least 65 people were killed in the shooting spree that lasted until Friday. Earlier on Sunday, the government imposed a seven-day ceasefire between Shia and Sunni communities, which was later extended to 10 days, police said. Despite the ceasefire, sporadic clashes continued between the two communities. “The death toll in the communal violence in Kurram since November 21 has risen to 122 as of Friday, while 145 others were injured,” police and hospital sources said.
