Chennai, Nov 11 (IANS) As Tamil Nadu inches closer to the 2026 assembly elections, actor Vijay’s political outfit Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has formally started the process of obtaining a common election symbol from the Election Commission of India (ECI). Party sources said the move follows Election Commission guidelines, which allow registered political parties to apply for a common symbol at least six months before the elections. With barely time left before the expected polling schedule, the TVK has submitted a formal memorandum seeking to allot a symbol that will be recognized in all the 234 assembly constituencies. A high-level delegation, including party joint general secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar and state executive members Pushpavanam Kuppusamy, Arjun Murthy and Vijay Prabhakaran, met the Chief Election Commissioner and other officials in New Delhi to submit the petition. The memorandum reportedly included a list of ten preferred symbols, from which the Commission is expected to allocate one after investigation. “The party is fully prepared to contest elections in all constituencies across Tamil Nadu. Therefore, a common symbol is necessary for voter identification and campaign coherence,” the plea said. TVK sources said the party leadership, including Vijay, considers this an important milestone in its political preparations. Following the unfortunate incident that took place in Karur during a people’s rally – an incident which deeply saddened the actor-politician – the party has taken steps to rebuild its organizational momentum and restore public confidence. Vijay has appealed to his supporters and workers to conduct all political activities in a disciplined and peaceful manner, to ensure that “no harm is caused to the public under any circumstances”. Election Commission sources indicated that after procedural assessment and verification of the party’s eligibility, the final decision on symbol allotment is expected by the end of December 2025. If allowed, the common symbol will be a turning point for TVK as it prepares for its electoral debut in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections next year. –IANS AL/SVN
