Chennai, Oct 12 (IANS) Actor and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay is likely to visit Karur on October 15 or 17 to personally meet and console the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic stampede during a TVK rally late last month.
According to party sources, Vijay has expressed his intention to visit Karur soon after the party’s 16-day mourning period ends on October 13.
A senior TVK functionary said, “Our leaders are deeply affected by the tragedy and are committed to meeting the families in person before Diwali. We have applied for police permission for the yatra on October 15 or 17 and the final date will be confirmed after getting police clearance.”
The disastrous incident took place on September 27 during a political rally of TVK in Velusamy Puram area of Karur. The event, which was attended by thousands of supporters, turned deadly when the overcrowding caused a stampede and stampede. 41 people, including women and children, were killed, and more than 60 others were injured.
This tragedy raised questions on crowd management and preparations for the event. Following the incident, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to each victim’s family, while the district administration and police launched an investigation.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by North Zone IG Asra Garg is probing the reasons and lapses behind the accident.
The Karur visit is Vijay’s first direct interaction with the affected citizens after starting his political journey earlier this year.
The actor, who formally entered politics with the formation of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam in February 2025, had earlier released a heartfelt video message expressing grief and spoke virtually with the bereaved families.
Party insiders said Vijay is expected to meet the victims’ families at a marriage hall near Velusamy Puram and personally hand over the financial assistance.
TVK district leaders are submitting a petition to the Karur Superintendent of Police demanding security arrangements for the yatra. Sources said the exact schedule is expected to be officially announced soon after getting police approval.
