Chennai, Nov 20 (IANS) Actor-politician and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay, who had halted his election campaign after the tragic incident in Karur where 41 people were killed in a stampede-like situation during his rally, is now likely to resume his political tour from Salem, according to senior party functionaries.
Vijay had suspended all campaign activities immediately after the disaster in Karur, which occurred when a huge crowd moved towards him during a public meeting. The incident deeply shocked the party leadership and its supporters, with TVK insiders saying the actor-turned-politician has still not fully recovered emotionally from the tragedy.
Despite the failure, Vijay participated in the special general committee and executive committee meetings of TVK held in Chennai recently. During the meeting, he reportedly said that his political journey would continue with greater determination and used the platform to strongly criticize the ruling DMK government.
Party insiders say his comments received overwhelming support from district secretaries and office-bearers.
In this meeting, leaders of various districts, especially Salem, expressed their desire to Vijay to restart the stalled campaign in their area. He said that, just as he had held big rallies in Namakkal and Karur, the next phase of his campaign should start from Salem – a neighboring district with a strong support base.
According to reports, Vijay agreed to this request in principle. Senior TVK figures have indicated that the leadership is now actively working on logistics for its comeback rally. However, he stressed that the final decision regarding the exact date, venue and program would be taken by the party high command and the general secretary.
TVK’s Salem district officials said they are ready to make all necessary arrangements as soon as they get the green signal from the leadership.
He also revealed that state level officials will soon visit Salem to assess the venues, apply for police permission and coordinate security measures, especially in the wake of the Karur tragedy.
With Tamil Nadu Assembly elections just a few months away, expectations are at their peak among TVK workers and Vijay supporters. Many believe that his return to the campaign trail starting from Salem will re-energize the party cadre and shape the momentum ahead of the crucial elections.
