Celebrated every year on 16 December, Vijay Diwas honors the bravery, intelligence and dedication of the Indian soldiers who fought bravely against the Pakistani Army in what is now considered to be one of the shortest but most significant conflicts in the military history of the country.
Vijay Diwas began on December 16, 1971, when the Pakistan Eastern Command unconditionally surrendered to the combined forces of the Indian Army and Bangladesh Mukti Bahini in Dhaka after about 13 days of intense combat operations.
The Indian Army, Navy and Air Force coordinated military operations against Pakistani troops stationed in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) during the 1971 war, which began on December 3 and ended on December 16, 1971.
Political and humanitarian issues in East Pakistan, where violent actions by West Pakistan’s military led to mass resistance and mass migration, led to the conflict.
Approximately 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered their arms at the time of the official signing of the Pakistani surrender document, making it one of the largest military surrenders since World War II. It marked the end of hostilities and paved the way for the birth of Bangladesh as an independent nation.
