Vietnamese President Vo Van Thang resigns after more than a year in office

Vietnamese President Vo Van Thang has resigned after more than a year in office, state media outlet Vietnam Express reported.

His resignation comes amid a fierce anti-corruption campaign at the highest levels of the Communist Party.

Truong, 54, took office as president in March 2023, two months after his predecessor Nguyen Xuan Phuc resigned to take “political responsibility” amid a corruption scandal during the pandemic. He is the youngest president since modern Vietnam emerged from war in the mid-1970s.

The office of Vietnam’s president is largely ceremonial and ranks third in the country’s political hierarchy.
