Earlier, the MTA said interstate lanes were closed in both directions and traffic was being rerouted due to an “incident” on the bridge.
A police spokesman for the Baltimore Police Department told NBC News people may be in the river. “I can confirm that at 1:35 a.m., Baltimore City Police were notified of a partial bridge collapse on the Francis Scott Key Bridge that may have resulted in workers falling into the water,” Detective Nikki Fennoy said in a statement.
Ship monitoring website MarineTraffic showed that a Singapore-flagged container ship named the Dali was parked under the bridge early on Tuesday.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. both said they were aware of the incident and rescue efforts were underway. Olszewski posted on X: “Please pray for those affected.”
