Heavy rains threw life into chaos in Dubai on Tuesday, damaging skyscrapers and flooding metro stations across the city. Flights were affected and so was road traffic as the city looked completely opposite to its luxurious appearance.
Flash floods have revealed unusual scenes in Dubai, including a submerged metro station where passengers were navigating through ankle-deep water. The ground floor of the station was completely flooded, with water seeping into the sides of the escalators.

Outside, cars were swamped. The roads resemble pools of water surrounded by the reflections of tall buildings, essentially locking thousands of residents into their homes.

“I’m sure these people are not going home today. The road has turned into a river,” said one woman as she photographed a main road clogged with traffic from her terrace. She also pointed to a submerged Land Cruiser whose passengers had to be rescued through the sunroof.

Dubai, which has the world’s busiest air hub for international passengers, also had to divert several inbound flights. Delays and cancellations have impacted operations at Dubai International Airport. The road leading to the airport was also flooded. Planes were seen taxiing on flooded runways and cars in airport parking lots were half submerged.
Several other city landmarks – including flagship malls such as The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates – were also flooded. Residential communities are facing difficulties with leaking roofs, doors and windows.
