The Election Commission on Friday announced that the voting to elect the vice president of India will be held on 9 September and counting on the same day.
The last day of filing nomination for the post of Vice President is 21 August. Candidates can be withdrawn by 25 August.
The post of Vice President was vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned by Jagdeep Dhankhar, citing health reasons on 21 July on the first day of the monsoon Parliament session on 21 July.
“To prefer health care and follow medical advice, I resign as the vice -president of India, immediately effective, according to Article 67 (A) of the Constitution,” read in the resignation letter of Dhankhar.
On Thursday, the Election Commission of India said that it had completed preparations and finalized the Electoral College list for the upcoming vice -chair election 2025.
In a post on X, the Election Commission shared, “Accordingly, the Commission has finalized the list of election college for the Vice Presidential election, 2025. These members are listed in a continuous serial order, described in the alphabet based on the state/center area of their respective homes.
The Vice President is elected by an Electoral College, consisting of members of both houses of Parliament, according to the system of proportional representation through single transferable vote, and in such an election, voting is done by secret voting.
Due to the termination of the post of tenure, an election to fill a vacancy has been completed before the end of the term. If a vacancy arises for the reasons for death, resignation or removal or otherwise, then the election is held as soon as possible to fill that vacancy. Such a person selected is entitled to take over for the entire period of five years from the date when he enters the office. (AI)
