New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) Vice President CP Radhakrishnan will visit Karnataka on Sunday, his first visit to the state after assuming office in September. An officer gave this information.
During his visit to the southern state, the Vice President will participate in the commemoration of His Holiness Acharya Shri 108 Shanti Sagar Maharaj Ji at Shravanabelagola, Hassan, paying homage to the revered Jain monk and spiritual leader.
The event marks the centenary of Charitra Chakraborty Acharya Shri 108 Shanti Sagar Maharaj’s first visit to Shravanabelagola in 1925, the official said in a statement.
During the commemoration, he will also participate in the ‘installation ceremony’ of the statue of Acharya Shri Shanti Sagar Maharaj and the ‘naming ceremony’ of the fourth hill.
Later in the day, Vice President Radhakrishnan will attend the sixteenth convocation of the JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research in Mysore, which is affiliated with Jagadguru Sri Veerasimhasana Mahasansthan Math, Suttur Srikshetra, and address the graduating students.
The Vice President will also visit the old complex of Suttur Monastery, one of the most prominent monastic centers in Karnataka.
He will offer prayers at Sri Chamundeshwari Devi Temple near Mysuru and Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple at Melkote in Mandya.
On Saturday, highlighting the profound contribution of Jainism, one of the world’s oldest religions, he said its teachings – ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truth), aparigraha (non-possessiveness), and anekantvad (multiple approaches to truth) – have left a lasting impact on India and the world.
Addressing the eighth 180th fasting ceremony of Jain Acharya Shri Hansratna Surishwarji Maharaj Ji in New Delhi, he said that the non-violence adopted by Mahatma Gandhi in India’s freedom struggle has been inspiring global peace movements.
The Vice President further highlighted that the Jain ethos of vegetarianism, compassion towards animals and sustainable living has been recognized across the world as a model for environmental responsibility.
Recounting his personal journey, he said he had adopted vegetarianism after coming to Kashi 25 years ago, noting that it inculcates humility, maturity and love for all beings.
He lauded the efforts of the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to grant ‘classical language’ status to Prakrit and preserve Jain manuscripts through initiatives like ‘Gyan Bharatam Mission’.
