New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS) Congress general secretary KC Venugopal on Tuesday said the Special In-depth Review (SIR) is a way for the Election Commission of India (ECI) to further the BJP’s “vote stealing agenda” and “sidestep the responsibilities” of the constitutional body.
Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge held a comprehensive strategy review with senior party leaders to discuss the special intensive review being conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in several states.
The meeting was attended by party general secretaries, in-charges, PCC and CLP leaders as well as secretaries of states and union territories where the SIR process is currently underway.
After the meeting, Venugopal took to Twitter and posted, “Under the leadership of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, participated in the review meeting with AICC general secretaries, in-charges, PCC presidents, CLP leaders and AICC secretaries of the 12 states where SIR is ongoing.”
The Congress Alappuzha MP stressed that although the revision of the voter list is an “undoubtedly necessary objective”, it should be done in a “truthful manner”.
“The conduct of the Election Commission so far has been to pursue the BJP’s vote-stealing agenda while ignoring its constitutional duty of impartiality,” he said.
Venugopal further said that the party will “consistently fight” against the ECI’s “attempts to manipulate the voter list by making undue deletions or including fake voters to create space for the BJP to carry out its nefarious activities”.
He said, “This is our democracy at stake, we will stand against every small or big attempt that endangers our constitutional framework.”
The meeting comes at a time when the Congress is facing internal and external pressure after its crushing defeat in the Bihar assembly elections, where the party got only six seats.
