Venezuela’s government on Thursday requested an emergency session of the UN Security Council focused on US military actions in recent weeks in the South American country’s waters.
This request was made in a letter addressed to Venezuela RussiaAmbassador to the United Nations and President of the Council, Vasily Nebenziawho accused the administration of the US President donald trump Seeking to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and endangering “peace, security and stability regionally and internationally”.
Maduro’s government also expressed expectation of an “armed attack” against Venezuela in a “very short time”.
The request comes a day after members of Congress rejected legislation that would have restricted Trump’s ability to use lethal military force against drug traffickers. The US military has carried out four deadly attacks in the Caribbean since Trump declared an “armed conflict” with drug cartels.
However, Maduro’s government says that white House Just using drug trafficking as a pretext for the operation.
Samuel Moncada, Venezuela’s ambassador to the United Nations, wrote in the letter, “The underlying objective is the same that has characterized the United States’ actions toward Venezuela for more than 26 years: to pursue its ‘regime change’ policies to gain control over the vast natural resources found in Venezuelan territory.”
Venezuela’s request does not mention the 21 people killed in four attacks on boats that the US has claimed were carrying drugs. According to the Trump administration, three of those boats headed out to sea from Venezuela.
Russia has been a long-time ally of Venezuela.
