Thiruvananthapuram, September 20 (IANS) Leader of Opposition VD Sathason, was once estimated as a generational change in the Congress party in Kerala, not caused by increasing dissatisfaction with the ruling CPI (M), rather unstable the political field under it.
When Sathasan was elevated in the LOP post in 2021, when Ramesh Chennithla was raised in the LOP post, it was seen as an attempt to get away from the stuck factional politics that has been stuck from the 1970s.
Bitter Karunakaran -Antony rivalry to Chandy -Chenithla years, group wars have shaped Congress politics in Kerala. The vocal leadership of Sathasan initially Chennite and the head of the state party. Help in curbing veterans like Sudhakaran.
However, the tables have changed with young leaders – Shafi Parambil, PC Vishnunath and VT Balaram – challenge them.
For the first time, the cases deteriorated when MLA Rahul Mamkootathil was affected by allegations of sexual misconduct.
Sathason’s tough stance against the MLA expressed sympathy for the “young Turks” from the social media network, who accused him of separating a colleague.
Supervisors pay attention to irony. A political analyst said, “During the tenure of Oomon Chandy as Chief Minister (2011–16), with KPCC President VM Sudheran, Satheson gave Chandi one of his most difficult times. Now, Sathsan is experiencing similar resistance,” said a political analyst.
Beyond the internal rumble, Sathasan is reportedly losing the faith of influential community organizations such as Nair Service Society (NSS) and Shri Narayan Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam – both are important players in Kerala’s electoral scenario.
These changes can weaken the traditional support base of the Congress.
Among these nations, Sathasan, who has represented Parvur since 2001 after his initial defeat in 1996, is said to have weighing a change for some strong Congress of Thrikkakarakara.
The constituency, which is considered loyal to the party, is seen as a safe condition.
For now, Sathasan has maintained a militant front in the assembly.
But internal sources say that the upcoming local body elections will be a decisive test for his leadership. Any shock can not only reduce its credibility, but can also carry forward internal rivals.
At a time when the Congress is struggling to regain the lost ground in Kerala, the ability to navigate the storm can determine both its own political existence and the party’s future projection in the state.
