Vaughan Gething announces Welsh Government cabinet – including leadership rivals for top job

Wales’ new first minister Vaughan Gething has announced his cabinet, which includes appointments to top jobs for his leadership rivals.

Mr. Gethin was identified as Walesfirst minister wednesday Mark Drakeford officially resigns.

His leadership rival, former education secretary Jeremy Miles, will now become cabinet minister for economy, energy and the Welsh language.

Ken Skates returns to Cabinet for the first time since 2021 as Cabinet Secretary for North Wales and Transport.

Lynne Neagle, who has been a member of Parliament since it was first formed in 1999, has been appointed as Wales’ new Education Minister.

Huw Irranca Davies returns to cabinet for the first time in six years as cabinet secretary for climate change and rural affairs.

Former rural affairs minister Lesley Griffiths has been announced as the new cabinet secretary for culture and social justice.

Mick Antonieff remains as general counsel, the government’s top legal position, while Eluned Morgan, Rebecca Evans and Julie James are responsible for the health, finance and housing briefs respectively.

Jane Hutt remains chief whip and becomes Trefnydd – a similar role to the Leader of the House of Commons.

Hannah Blythyn and Dawn Bowden also remain in the cabinet, with Hannah Blythyn continuing as Minister for Social Partnerships and Dawn Bowden ) as Minister for Social Care.

Jayne Bryant also joins the cabinet for the first time as minister for mental health and early education.

Former social services deputy minister Julie Morgan and former climate change deputy minister Lee Waters have both left cabinet.
