The nationwide celebrations will include massive performances of the full version of Vande Mataram in public places, schools and institutions, which symbolizes the unity and pride of India.
Written by the eminent Bengali writer and poet Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Vande Mataram first appeared in his 1882 novel AnandamathIt is based on the backdrop of the Sanyasi rebellion of the 18th century.
Written in Sanskrit, the song soon became a rallying cry for India’s freedom fighters, resonating through protests, meetings and movements during the freedom struggle.
In 1896, Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore gave the first public presentation of Vande Mataram at the Indian National Congress session in Kolkata.
This song was declared the national song of India by the Constituent Assembly on 24 January 1950.
The then Speaker of the Assembly, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, emphasized that Vande Mataram would get equal respect with the national anthem Jana Gana Mana.
