Chamoli, Nov 4 (IANS) The National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) has opened the doors of employment to thousands of people across the country, especially women associated with Self Help Groups (SHGs).
In Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, hundreds of women associated with SHGs are availing the opportunities under the mission and using it to earn their livelihood.
Thousands of women in Chamoli, the border district of Uttarakhand, have opened their business ventures with the assistance received under NRLM and today they are supporting themselves as well as their families.
By taking advantage of the government assistance provided under NRLM, they are rapidly becoming self-reliant. They are earning a good amount of money by selling thousands of mountain products. They are also earning good income by selling traditional sweets.
While the public is readily purchasing these products, the women are also getting appreciation from the villagers and local residents and many youths are quite inspired who wish to join SHGs to lead a respectable life.
Beneficiary Kanta Rawat, while talking to IANS, said that she is marketing the Pahari products through NRLM through outlets and is earning good profits. People are accepting these mountain products wholeheartedly. Her husband is also supporting her in this endeavour.
Specifically, the National Rural Livelihood Mission is a flagship poverty alleviation program implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development, which aims to reduce poverty by enabling poor households to access gainful self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities, resulting in sustainable and diversified livelihood options for the poor.
NRLM has become a cornerstone of rural poverty alleviation and women empowerment in India as it has opened up credit, skills training and market opportunities to women beneficiaries, enabling sustainable livelihoods and financial resilience.
