Usher, Fantasia Barrino’s “The Color Purple” Win 55th NAACP Image Award

Usher was named Entertainer of the Year on Saturday night at the 55th annual NAACP Awards, which highlights the work of entertainers and writers of color.

After Usher accepted the award at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium, the R&B superstar singer spoke about his gratitude for his successful three-decade career.

He recounted some of his recent biggest moments, including a sold-out show in Las Vegas, getting married, the release of his ninth studio album “Coming Home” and his Super Bowl halftime performance, It became the most watched show in the history of the sport.

Arthur defeated Coleman Domingo, Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey and Keke Palmer.

“I don’t know how many people do so much in one environment,” said the multiple Grammy winner, who was presented with the award by Oprah Winfrey. After being surprised by Winfrey’s appearance, he thanked those who had supported him over the years.

“This is for you, your, my number one,” the singer said as the audience repeated his words to him.The last words of his speech were lyrics from his hit song “Superstar” from his 2024 album Confessions, which has sold more than 10 million copies in the United States.

Earlier in the ceremony, Usher was awarded the President’s Award for his public service achievements through the New Look Foundation. He thanked the strong women in his life, including his mother and wife Jenn Goicoechea, whom he married after last month’s Super Bowl halftime performance.

“Behind, next to or beside every strong man is an even stronger woman,” he said.

Queen Latifah hosted the awards show, which was broadcast live on BET.

“The Color Purple” won Best Picture. The musical film features an impressive cast, including Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Domingo, HER, Danielle Brooks, Corey Hawkins and Bailey.

Barrino won the Best Actress Award for her performance as Celie in the film.

“I didn’t prepare a speech because I didn’t think I was going to win,” the singer and actor said. “I was scared to play Celie, but I’m so glad I did it. Because I’ve always said, ‘If I don’t win, the awards I’m going to win will be from the people who watch The Color Purple and the people who resonate with her and who are stepping out When women feel like Oscars.'”

New Edition was inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. This entry is awarded to individuals who are considered pioneers in their fields and have impacted their careers.

“We stand here in brotherhood,” said Michael Bivens, with his group members behind him. The Grammy-nominated band includes Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, Ronnie DeVoe and Ricky Bell.

“You’ve seen our story. You know what we went through,” Bivens said, talking about the group’s early years overcoming conflict and tension to now have a residency in Las Vegas.

“But we call every day,” he continued, “and we text every day. We check in on our families. You watch us grow. We’re still growing.”

Damson Idris won best actor in a drama series for his performance in “Snowfall.” Henson and Domingo won best supporting actors for “The Color Purple.” Domingo also won the Best Actor award for his role in “Rustin.”
