Washington:
A U.S. Army intelligence analyst was arrested Thursday on suspicion of providing defense information to China.
Sergeant Corbin Schultz, who holds a top-secret security clearance, was detained at the Fort Campbell military base on the Kentucky-Tennessee border, the Justice Department said in a statement.
Schultz’s indictment does not identify the country to which he allegedly provided sensitive military information, but media reports have named it China.
The indictment alleges that Schultz provided documents, maps and photos related to U.S. defense to contacts in Hong Kong starting in June 2022.
Schultz was allegedly paid a total of $42,000 for the information.
The Justice Department said it included information about possible U.S. plans in the event of a military attack on Taiwan.
It also includes documents related to fighter jets and helicopters, hypersonic equipment, High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and research on the U.S. and Chinese militaries.
Schultz’s indictment came shortly after two U.S. Navy sailors were arrested in California on suspicion of spying for China.
Sergeant Zhao Wenheng was sentenced to 27 months in prison in January after pleading guilty to charges of conspiring with foreign intelligence officials and accepting bribes.
Zhao and another U.S. sailor, Wei Jinchao, were arrested in August.
