Video released Tuesday showed a man confronting six police officers in a hallway of a building.
They asked the man to approach them with his arms raised, and at first he seemed to agree.
But he did not stop moving and continued walking with his hands clenched into fists and an object in his hand, which police said they believed was a screwdriver.
Officers tried to subdue him but were unsuccessful, police said in a statement.
In the video, the man approaches the police after hearing gunshots.
“The suspect stole an officer and the beanbag shotgun she was holding, resulting in an officer-involved shooting,” the statement said.
Police arrived at the building after someone called the emergency line to report an “assault with a deadly weapon” inside the warehouse.
The caller said the person was under the influence of drugs or alcohol and threatened the employer with a stick.
Makani died at a nearby hospital.
No warehouse employees or police officers were injured.
